CRW Bags Big Boost from Poundland
July 13, 2012
Poundland, Europe’s biggest single price discount retailer, has donated the money from sales of its plastic carrier bags, totalling an astounding £32,804.01, to Cancer Research Wales. This is the first time Poundland has made a donation of this size to a charity from its carrier bag sales.
Welsh legislation requires retailers to charge five pence for every plastic carrier bag sold. In response, Poundland wanted to donate the money incurred from the carrier bag sales to a charity which colleagues chose. Welsh Poundland employees chose Cancer Research Wales in order to support research in the local area and put money back in to the community.
Nineteen Poundland stores from across Wales participated from 1 October 2011 to 1 April 2012 to raise money for the local charity. Retail Director at Poundland, Tim McDonnell, will present the cheque to Cancer Research Wales on 28 June at Poundland’s Cardiff store to Charity Director Liz Andrews and Fundraising Manager Laura Hooper.
Jim McCarthy, CEO at Poundland comments: “We are absolutely delighted to be able to give this money to such a worthy charity. The donation means a lot to our colleagues and customers and we are proud to demonstrate our support to local people affected by cancer”.
Liz Andrews, Cancer Research Wales Charity Director, said: “We are thrilled to receive such a wonderful donation from Poundland and we would like to extend our thanks to the Poundland colleagues who selected Cancer Research Wales as their chosen charity. All the money raised will stay in Wales to fund exciting new research which will make a huge difference to the fight against cancer.”
