Mayor volunteers to support Cancer Research Wales

November 3, 2011

The Lord Mayor of Cardiff tried his hand at volunteering recently as part of a national scheme to support his charity of the Year, Cancer Research Wales.

Every year Cancer Research Wales works with Cards for Good Causes which is an organisation that sells Christmas cards on behalf of hundreds of charities across the UK. The project was officially established in 1988 and now has 300 outlets across the UK.

Cllr Professor Delme Brown took time out to visit the largest of the stores in Wales, St John’s Church in Cardiff, which sells thousands of cards for Cancer Research Wales each year.

Cancer Research Wales Charity Director Liz Andrews said: “We’d like to thank the Lord Mayor for his help at the shop.

“We’ve worked with Cards for Good Causes for many years across their Welsh stores and have found it a great way to ensure that as many people as possible have the opportunity to buy our cards.

“We sell a lot of our cards from our website now, but there is still a huge demand for people that want to buy them in person. Although we sell them at events such as the Eisteddfod and the Royal Welsh, as well as in our shops in Pontypridd, Caerphilly and Whitchurch people can’t always make it to those locations. St John’s is located in the heart of the city centre with easy access and plenty of parking.

“The cards are a great way for people to support the charity and help us to continue to fund vital research into cancer treatments in Wales.”

Last year Cancer Research Wales raised more than £34,000 from the sale of Christmas cards.

St John’s Church is located at the end of Church Street near the Cornish Bakehouse and Owain Glyndwr. Other venues in Cardiff also selling the cards include Bethany Baptist Church Hall and St Andrew’s United Reformed Church.

As well as Cancer Research Wales cards, which this year feature designs such as the classic nativity scene and festive sheep, the stores also sell a range of Christmas merchandise including advent calendars, wrapping paper and gift tags.

If you can’t get down to St John’s, the charity Christmas cards can be purchased on Cancer Research Wales’ website www.crw.org.uk or by calling the fundraising office on 029 2031 6976.
