Super Stuart’s marathon weekend raises £6k
23 Apr 2013
Stuart Boddy, 53 from Cardiff, has managed to raise in excess of £6,000 for Cancer Research Wales after completing a marathon challenge which saw him perform 2,437 sit-ups in just one session and then run the Virgin London Marathon that same weekend.
The sit-up challenge represented the 2,437 men that were diagnosed with prostate cancer in Wales in 2010, sports fanatic Stuart completed the sit-up challenge in just one hour and 30 minutes. And after securing one of Cancer Research Wales’ Golden Ballot places, he then went on to complete the Virgin London Marathon.
So far Stuart has raised more than £4,000, smashing his target of £2,000, partly helped by a shirt signing and auction supported by family friend and Welsh rugby captain, Sam Warburton.
Speaking about his marathon challenge, Stuart said: “With my new love of running and fitness, the sit-up challenge and London Marathon seemed like the perfect way for me to raise money and awareness for Cancer Research Wales and the extraordinary work they do for prostate cancer research.
“My life changed when I was told I had cancer, but all the staff at Velindre and Cancer Research Wales have been fantastic throughout this whole experience. I have realised just how lucky I am that my cancer is treatable.
“I cannot thank Sam, his partner Rachael, and all his family enough for the support they have given me. I would also like to thank Bannatynes, Llanishen for supporting my event.”
Laura Hooper, Fundraising Manager for Cancer Research Wales said:“We are extremely grateful for Stuart’s support. He is so passionate about raising funds for Cancer Research Wales and increasing awareness among men; his efforts mean a lot to the charity.”
